About

My name is Mike Hillwig and I live in Salem, MA with my pug, Reggie. I've just started a new DBA (database administrator) job with a high tech company who makes a product I don't understand yet. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, I moved to Providence in December 2004 and then to Boston in November 2005. March of 2008 brought me to Salem on the Massachusetts north shore.

What else do you want to know? I'm an aviation geek, a foodie, have some tattoos and live with Multiple Sclerosis. Anything else, just ask.

Saying Goodbye

In seven days, I’ll be temporarily unemployed. My last day at Shawmut is next Friday, and I start my new job the following Monday. It’s kind of scary.

I’ve spent the past week cleaning out my office, returning my extra machines to inventory and storing all of the extra cables, mice, and monitors that go with them. On top of that, I’ve been going around the office and telling people that I’m moving on. Today, I went down to our office at “500” and talked to some folks. I got to talk to Chett, and he was one of the people I wanted to make sure heard it personally and not by e-mail. This is the guy who has been with the company since the beginning. When he says something, it matters.

In almost four years, I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff in my office. Everything from books to toys to gadgets to my Bartlet for America bumper sticker is getting packed up. Just about the only personal thing left in the office is Reggie’s bed, and I might throw that out.

Now I need to get through next week and prepare my farewell message to the company.

Until then, the weekend has arrived.
