About

My name is Mike Hillwig and I live in Salem, MA with my pug, Reggie. I'm a DBA (database administrator) with a high tech company. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, I moved to Providence in December 2004 and then to Boston in November 2005. March of 2008 brought me to Salem on the Massachusetts north shore.

What else do you want to know? I'm an aviation geek, a foodie, have some tattoos and live with Multiple Sclerosis. This year, I'm in my first season singing Baritone with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. If there is anything else you'd like to know, just ask. I'm hardly shy.

Rare MD11 sighting

I was craving ice cream tonight about 9:00 and set out on foot with $4 in my pocket in the hopes of finding ice cream.  About two blocks away there is a convenience store that I’d never been in, so I tried it. I got there just as they were closing, but I got my cold confection and I was happy. As I was walking, I noticed that the runway that causes planes to fly over my apartment was in use. I believe that runway is 15R.  I started walking to find a better vantage point, and I most certainly did.

American Legion Playground is down the street from my house about three blocks, and it’s the perfect place to watch the planes coming in. I saw the usual Northwest A320, JetBlue A320, American Eagle ERJ, but the big sighting tonight was a FedEx Express MD11. I don’t get to see those very often, so it was exciting. Keep in mind that most of the FedEx flights come in overnight or very early in the morning. Who the hell is out taking pictures when FedEx is landing their planes?

Oddly, the plane I see on the ground but never in the air is the UPS A300. It’s a good looking aircraft, but I’ve never flown on one.

The links in this entry are to photos of the planes I’m referencing. They’re from airliners.net, one of my favorite sites on the net.  I’m not the photographer, but I do have my own collection of pictures posted on there.  Hopefully now that I live near the airport I can get some more photos published.
