About

My name is Mike Hillwig and I live in Salem, MA with my pug, Reggie. I'm a DBA (database administrator) with a high tech company. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, I moved to Providence in December 2004 and then to Boston in November 2005. March of 2008 brought me to Salem on the Massachusetts north shore.

What else do you want to know? I'm an aviation geek, a foodie, have some tattoos and live with Multiple Sclerosis. This year, I'm in my first season singing Baritone with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. If there is anything else you'd like to know, just ask. I'm hardly shy.

A Few Things

The last two days, I’ve realized that my bluetooth headset is really shitty. I shouldn’t complain because it was a gift. I need to replace it, hopefully before I leave for Scottsdale next weekend.

Living near the airport, I see a lot of planes taking off over my house. I’ve come to a realization: the loudest planes that take off aren’t the 747s and A340s. In fact, those are newer planes with more quiet engines. The loudest planes are the MD82/MD83 and MD88 aircraft. These planes are 20 to 25 years old and make a lot more noise.

Oddly, American is looking to replace their aging MD80 aircraft. By replacing those aircraft with 737s, American will have an almost all-Boeing fleet. American still has 34 Airbus A300 aircraft that they fly mostly out of Miami.

I think Delta still has some 737s on order from Boeing, too. If they replace the MD88s with 737s, they really will have an all-Boeing aircraft.
