Yesterday was a rough travel day. When weather hits, this is going to happen. One of my coworkers was bent out of shape because his non-stop to Boston was delayed by two hours. He hates to travel and hasn’t done it too much. I told him that when it’s weather, you just have to suck it up. When it’s mechanical or staffing problems, then you can get pissed. But when mother nature causes this, just suck it up.
When I got to Nashville, everything was on time. Then they announced the Delta non-stop (that my two coworkers were on) would be delayed two hours due to a ground stop in Boston due to weather. Shortly after that, my flight to Charlotte got delayed about 20 minutes. I went to the US Airways ticket counter and asked about my connection in Charlotte. My hope was that they’d put me on the Delta non-stop and get me home sooner. They told me I had an hour in Charlotte and would be fine. So we waited. I should have pushed the agent on this. My history as a road worrier had alarm bells ringing in my head, saying this was a bad thing.
Shortly after the Delta flight departed, they announced the flight to Charlotte would be delayed again. Then I got paged to the podium, where they told me that my connection was now in jeopardy. I will give kudos that the US Airways ticket agent was very upbeat and told me that he was able to get me home that night, just not on US Airways. He was booking me on Delta flights through Atlanta.
I proceeded to the Delta gate where the woman got me booked on flight 1502 to Atlanta. Unfortunately, she put me in a center seat, but she at least got me out of Nashville. This woman was terribly efficient but had zero personality. You would have sworn she was German because she was so efficient with minimal personality. Eh.
Flight 1502 to Atlanta was short but decent. It was my first trip on a Delta 737-800. Then I landed in Atlanta. I called my friend Ryan to let him know I was in his city. Even though I wouldn’t be able to see him, I at least wanted to call him from Altanta. Part of me wanted my flight to Boston to get cancelled just so I could see him, but I really just wanted to get home.
Delta flight DL1578 to Boston was just over two hours. The crew was decent and their snack service was superior to US Airways. Finally, my luggage was on the belt within ten minutes of arrival. It was a very long day, but it was good to get home.
I have to say that Delta impressed me. I called Delta today to find my SkyMiles number and to arrange for credit of last night’s flights. Now that I live in Boston, maybe my love affair with US Airways needs to come to an end. I’ve always tried to be monogamous with my miles. Now that I have enough miles on US Airways for a free ticket, it just might be time to start giving more business to Delta.
