Commuter Hell
Jul 11th, 2006 by Mike

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/07/11/commute_affected_by_big_dig_collapse/

It took me twice as long to get to work as it normally does. I really have no clue how I’m going to get home tonight. I might actually try to bail out of here at 3:00 so I don’t sit in traffic for hours. Of all the mornings to forget to put a pad down for Reggie…

Manager Mike?
Jul 10th, 2006 by Mike

My boss is looking into hiring a VB/VBScript developer. This is a good thing. Today, I floated the idea that this person should report to me, wondering what my boss would think. His initial reaction was “No.” But then he started to think and asked me why I thought so. I gave him a pretty solid business case. He’s going to think about it. My hunch is that it won’t happen, but I got him thinking.

I’ve never really managed people before, so this would be something new to me. However, it’s one of my long term career goals.

Physical Therapy
Jul 10th, 2006 by Mike

My checking account currently has a balance of $875.55 and there is a check for $850.00 about to come through. That leaves me with $25.55, not a very big pillow. Wednesday can’t come soon enough.

I went to take my meds this morning (the ones in my desk drawer) and found $10 that I had put in my desk drawer last week and had forgotten. That’s lunch! Maybe.

I just had my first physical therapy appointment. My therapists’s name is Liz and her first deduction is that I have tight hamstrings. Mary (my trainer) told me the exact same thing. It seems that this is part of the reason I’m having trouble with my back.

Early Bedtime
Jul 9th, 2006 by Mike

I’ve been completely wiped out today. I’m not sure if it was the 3:00 AM wakeup call or if my MS is just kicking my ass. Anyway, tomorrow starts a long week at work so I’m going to bed at 9:00. I’m not even going to watch Iron Chef America.

Oh, and tomorrow I start physical therapy for my back. That ought to be interesting.

World Cup: Italy beats France

This isn’t that big of a deal, right? Wel, in a way it is. I don’t like the french.

Blog is back
Jul 9th, 2006 by Mike

I blew up my blog today trying to reinstall the software. Getting the files FTP’d from my laptop was a challenge and then restoring the database was hell. But I think I’m back for now.

Cooking on a shoestring
Jul 9th, 2006 by Mike

Money is tight right now. After paying my rent and car insurance, I’m left with $26 in my checking account. I probably have about $20 in cash, too. This has to last me until Wednesday. Yeah, it’s that tight. The good news is that Wednesday’s paycheck is pretty much clear. It’ll go toward paying down a credit card that will be used to secure the rental car for my trip to Pittsburgh.

I had some guests last night. Beth asked me if I could keep the boys overnight, and I was happy to have them. It was a little rough because Reggie and Buddy play hard. Oh, do they play hard. Brutus, on the other hand, was an absolute gem.

Oh, the point of my post… I was trying to figure out what to cook using what I had on-hand. Using some ground beef from the freezer and a few cans of crushed tomatoes, I made a pretty good pasta sauce. And it made a bunch, so that will get me through the next few days.

I was telling Beth that ten years ago, I could survive for weeks on $50. It was so easy then. It’s not hard today, really. I’m just used to spending money when I want on what I want. It really is all about perspective.

Friday night
Jul 7th, 2006 by Mike

Things are better today.

Work was busy but productive. My plans were to take the afternoon off. That idea quickly went down the tubes.

Mike called me tonight. That was a bonus.

I really don’t have much to say. That’s rare for me.

Don’t pet the sweaty stuff
Jul 6th, 2006 by Mike

I’m having a bad day. All kinds of little things just make it seem like things are worse than they really are.

I needed to hear a friendly voice and I called Josh.  We go back a long time, close to ten years now.

Tomorrow will be better. In order to make that happen sooner, I’m going to take some Xanax and go to bed.

der Speigel
Jul 6th, 2006 by Mike

Now that Germany has lost to Italy in the World Cup, it means that the front page of the international version of der Spiegel isn’t dedicated to the World Cup. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun to watch a bit of it, but I’m not a fanatic.

der Speigel you may ask?

I’ve been trying to keep a more rounded view of the world, and that means reading news that isn’t from a US-based agency.
