When Good Recipes Go Bad
Jun 30th, 2006 by Mike

I attempted to make myself a fruit crumble tonight, and it didn’t come out very well. In retrospect, I only used a half cup of flour instead of a full cup. That explains a lot of things.

The fruit itself has a fantastic flavor with apples, blueberries and strawberries. It’s just the crumble that turned out soft an buttery.

I’ll pick up some fruit tomorrow at the Haymarket and see if I can do this again.

Grocery Store Drama
Jun 30th, 2006 by Mike

All I wanted was dish soap and ice cream sandwiches. This took me to the Shaw’s in East Boston since it’s so close to my house. I was thinking about running out to Stop and Shop on 1A, but since I only wanted two things, I decided on going to Shaw’s. That was a bit of a mistake.

As I was checking out, this man starts yelling for the manager. It seems that one of the store employees ran over him with a shopping cart. I kid you not, that was his claim. And he was being VERY vocal about this. The man was obviously drunk, stoned, high, or some combination of the three. He certainly wasn’t all together. He screamed a lot of profanities and was getting violent with people. One store manager tried to calm him down while the other called the police. As I was walking out of the store, trying to avoid becoming part of this scene, two members of the Boston Police arrived.

When I got to my car, I had to fight every urge to take a picture. It’s part of my nature to want to take pictures of everything, and this was no exception. Something told me to just get in the car and get away from there promptly.

My friend Kim from Pittsburgh (a big black guy we lovingly refer to as Mr. Kim) has a philosphy… I don’t know nothing about nobody’s business. He just might be onto something there.

Not only did I get my ice cream sandwiches and dish soap, I got some berries to make another crumble.

Closing
Jun 30th, 2006 by Mike

It’s 2:00 PM on Friday, and we’re closing the office at 3:00 this week.

Everyone is asking what my plans for the weekend/holiday include. Well, I’ll be vacationing on the island of East Boston with Reggie. I need to do some cleaning and unpacking around the house. I’ve lived here two months and still haven’t finished unpacking.

Monday, I’m working and probably bringing Reggie with me. Tuesday, I’m doing some database maintenance stuff, but I’ll be doing it from home.

Hopefully I’ll see Mike at some point over the weekend, too.

I could have gone to Toronto for BMEFest this weekend, but I’m not in the financial position to do that, especially considering that I’m heading home in a few weeks.

Baby at Work
Jun 29th, 2006 by Mike

My coworker Debbie had a baby three months ago. I can’t believe it’s been that long. She brought the baby in today for a visit. This may be hard to believe, but the little girl loved me. Other people would hold her, and she would start to cry. I’d take her and she’d settle down. For close to half of Debbie’s visit, I held the baby. She fell asleep in my arms and was the most precious thing.

Debbie comes back August 7. I can’t wait.

Busy Signal
Jun 29th, 2006 by Mike

I went to use my phone tonight and got a recording that my service had been suspended for lack of payment. When I got home, I logged into the Cingular site, and wouldn’t you know that I hadn’t paid my bill last month? So I paid that one and got my service back. I’m usually on top of that, but somehow it slipped through the cracks.

I’m going to have to be really careful over the rest of the summer with being so busy at work. I can’t fall behind on my bills for lack of attention.

Only gay men would say…
Jun 29th, 2006 by Mike

“Alright, general question. Do you believe in god?”
“You mean other than Madonna?”

That’s a quote from Latter Days. Only gay men will get that.

Three…
Jun 28th, 2006 by Mike

This is the third Wednesday night that I’ve gone out with Mike. We watched a movie, Latter Days, a very cute gay film.  It’s a couple of years old, but it’s a good story. Granted, it’s not The Broken Hearts Club or Trick, but still a good movie.

I have my work cut out for me at work right now. About 90% of my time is supposed to be spent on our CRM system and about 10% on DBA work. At least that’s the theory. I’m starting to have some concerns with a couple of the databases we use internally within our IT department, so we’re probably going to be creating a new virtual server on the database cluster and move three databases from one VS to another. That’s going to take more than 10% of my time, but it’s time well spent. That also means hardware upgrades on the two servers that make up the cluster. Fortunately, that’s somebody else’s responsibility.

Tomorrow, I don my trainer’s hat and do some training for some pretty high profile people. This should be interesting.

Long Wednesday
Jun 28th, 2006 by Mike

Oh, it’s been a long day. Very long, indeed. But first… yesterday.

I had dinner with Mike last night. The food was good, the drinks great, and the company outstanding. I like this guy. After dinner, we went back to our mutual friends’ house (where he’s housesitting) to watch a movie. It was a good time.

This morning, I overslept, which sucked. I do recall the alarm going off, I think. I made it into the office by 8:15 but had to leave shortly after that because I had a doctor’s appointment. That was with my shrink. I’m still reasonably sane, he assures me. Then back to the office. It was a frantic, frenetic day. I do recall spending a good chunk of time trying to get our color copier/printer to duplex.

About 4:00, my boss pulled me into his office. He got sucked into a meeting and that resulted in him needing to get some data by first thing tomorrow morning. Guess who that fell to? Yup.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday night. I’m going to go see Mike again. smile

Training
Jun 26th, 2006 by Mike

I found out this morning that I’m going to a couple of Microsoft training classes for my DBA certification. By September, I should have my first round of classes done.
